If your builder dies or becomes insolvent your contract will be held in limbo and the construction site may be abandoned and left exposed to the elements without protection. In that situation you will need to lodge a claim with the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) under your Domestic Building Insurance policy before work can be completed or defects rectified.
To support your claim you must provide a Building Consultant’s report prepared by an independent qualified consultant. This report is to document each alleged defect or incomplete item of work against the original building contract and includes photographs, detailed descriptions and, where relevant, cost estimates for rectification. Without this report the VMIA cannot assess which items are covered by your policy.
Altez has extensive experience preparing VMIA reports for homeowners in these circumstances. Our reports are consistently accepted by the authority and have guided many clients through a smooth claims process. For example, when Porter Davis Homes entered liquidation in March 2023, Altez was engaged and recommended by building surveyors and insurance companies thanks to our impartial judgement and professional service.
