In my many years as a building inspector, I have lost count of how many times I have turned down offers of higher fees when clients asked me to revise a report for their unfair advantage without proper grounds or basis. Among my clients have been major builders and developers willing to pay three to five times the normal inspection rate for a report that favours them. The temptation is real, and I can only imagine how many inspectors in this industry might abandon their principles to accept such offers. These high-value proposals usually come from buyers seeking false claims or from agents and vendors hoping to influence our findings to secure a better sale price. Over the years, I have lost many engagements because I refused to write reports I did not believe in. I would rather grow my business steadily and do the right thing than pursue rapid expansion by accepting these deals.
My focus has always been on integrity and impartiality and, through this commitment, I have built a brand the public can trust. Our inspectors are recruited for the right qualifications and required to complete an in-house training programme before becoming independent building inspectors. Altez has become a brand recognised by the public for our professionalism. As the company grows, we add more inspectors over the years to meet demand rather than selling franchise rights or running quick‐fix courses for newcomers. Unlike most inspection companies in the industry, I found that most new franchise owners are retired business owners or professionals from different fields seeking a career change or a new income stream.
At Altez we follow a traditional expansion model. New inspectors undergo interviews and only a few are selected. Every inspector completes professional inspection courses, earns certificates, holds at least a Diploma in Building and Construction and then undertakes hundreds of hours of supervised field training under a seasoned inspector. Those who cannot meet our standards do not stay. While we do have franchise partners, those rights are awarded only to individuals who have demonstrated professional excellence with us over many years. We never sell those rights externally.
